CAC-FRAS Launching Workshop
The Central Asia and Caucasus Forum for Rural Advisory Services (CAC-FRAS) was formalized and registered in the Kyrgyz Republic in May 2018. On August 28-29, 2018, a launching workshop for CAC-FRAS took place in Issyk Kul region of the Kyrgyz Republic.
35 participants from 11 countries (Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Turkey, South Korea, Philippines, Trinidad and Tobago, Russia and Switzerland) attended the launching event, i.e. a mix of people from the CAC region (22 participants) and from outside the CAC region (13 participants). The participants were either representing rural or agricultural advisory (extension) organisations or projects and organisations working through or with local advisory organisations.
In addition to this workshop, a first meeting of the Coordination council of CAC-FRAS took place on the day before the workshop.
The discussions and presentations showed that extension services are crucial to achieve progress in the agricultural sector, and in the CAC region still a lot needs to be done for effective and efficient extension systems. It was useful to get to know about successful systems from other countries – not Western countries, but countries at a similar level than those in the region. Participants also was informed about the South-Korean Extension System.
Vision, mission, scope and modes of work, membership, as well as organizational structure were thoroughly discussed and reviewed. It was suggested that General Assembly of CAC-FRAS should be an overarching body of the Forum for taking strategic decisions, and CAC-FRAS Executive body should follow-up and propose actions required for institutional changes.
